The narrative follows Jo as she navigates the social hierarchy dominated by a new generation of "The Plastics": Mandi Weatherly, Chastity Meyer, and Hope Plotkin.

The secret deal is eventually exposed by Mandi, leading to a falling out between Jo and Abby. Jo must then work to repair her friendships and prove that her bond with Abby was real, culminating in a showdown at a school-wide powder-puff football game.

Jo reluctantly accepts and forms a "counter-clique" with Abby to dismantle Mandi’s reign. However, as they successfully turn the school against the Plastics, Jo begins to enjoy her new popularity, and the lines between her "paid" friendship and genuine loyalty start to blur.

Jo's primary goal is to attend Carnegie Mellon University, but her father, a NASCAR mechanic, cannot afford the tuition. After Jo defends a bullied outcast named Abby Hanover (Jennifer Stone), Abby's wealthy father offers Jo a deal: he will pay her full college tuition if she agrees to become Abby's friend for the remainder of senior year.
