The collaboration between and Jay-Z is widely regarded as one of the most successful genre-bending experiments in modern music history. : Mike Shinoda handled much of the production, sending initial demos to Jay-Z, who reportedly responded with immediate enthusiasm. The entire EP was recorded in a high-energy four-day session in July 2004.

The collaboration wasn't just a simple layering of tracks; Linkin Park restructured their original songs from the ground up to match Jay-Z’s tempo and delivery.

: Inspired by Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album (a mashup of Jay-Z and The Beatles), MTV approached Jay-Z for a "mashup" show. He personally selected Linkin Park to be his partner for the project.
