Before Times New Roman became the default face of every high school essay and legal brief, it was a bespoke creation born from a public insult. In 1929, typographer Stanley Morison criticized The Times (London) for being "badly printed and typographically behind the times". Instead of ignoring him, the newspaper dared him to create something better. The Birth of Times Modern is the current bespoke version of that lineage:
