Family secrets vary in their scale and the number of people who know them. They can be shared by the entire family, known only by a few members, or held by a single individual.

These are shared by some family members but hidden from others. Examples include one parent hiding a child's misbehavior from the other, or a grandparent sharing a "forbidden" truth with a grandchild.

These are known by only one person, such as a hidden addiction or a past traumatic event like an assault.
